Talk job before salary.
Once you have discussed the job thoroughly and have an offer in hand, that's when to start salary negotiations. Don't reveal your hand before this. If during the job discussion you find out the job is too low-level, don't ask about the money, try to instead upgrade the job. Once you have thoroughly discussed the job and have a solid offer, start your smart negotiations. If you're in your final round of interviews and the employer still hasn't mentioned salary, politely ask about a salary range for the position. And always have your own "walk-away" number in mind, which represents the minimum salary that you will accept.
