Tip Seven:

Stalling increases your odds.
It's common for employers to ask about a salary range; they want to gauge your expectations and see if they can afford you. For the same reason it is critical to understand that, if your salary expectation is more than they want to pay, they will likely discard your resume. If your salary requirement is very low, they will discard your resume, assuming that you're not qualified or underselling yourself. So you have a one-third chance of getting it right and moving along in the hiring process. The trick is to postpone the topic until you have a better idea of what they will offer. if you can't postpone the conversation, disclose your salary history instead of your current requirements. Finesse the answer though. Don't just say you earned $50,000 and end that statement. Instead, qualify that you earned that much in your last job and that you learned many skills which make you worth $60,000 by today's standards.
